Overview of Spring 2010 Placement
Grace Jeong
Deputy Director of the Recruitment Team

The Spring 2010 placement season was monumental for EPIK in terms of the increased number of Guest English Teachers placed at public schools nationwide in a timely manner. EPIK placed 752 Guest English Teachers at public schools in 13 provinces. EPIK fulfilled 100% of 13 POE's demand as well as the request of national public schools. EPIK had a great number of intake; 1,964 candidates applied for EPIK. Out of these 1,964 applications (261% of the recruitment goal), 1,843 applicants (245% of the recruitment goal) were interviewed and 892 (119% of the recruitment goal) were recommended to the Provincial Offices of Education.
We would especially like to highlight the big increase in the number of direct applications to the EPIK office as well. Three hundred and forty six applications were submitted and 115 finalists (15.3%) were hired out of all the direct applications for this term alone. Since EPIK has been operating the direct application system, the number of GETs hired has steadily increased, with 18 hired in 2007, 60 in 2008 and 164 in 2009. Enhancing the direct application system can contribute to budget savings and can also provide opportunities to upgrade recruitment capabilities by establishing solid guidelines and sharing them within the EPIK team.
In terms of the statistics for the March 2010 placement, about 6% of the new EPIK teachers were employed as level 1, the highest employment level, 6.6% level 2+, about 50% level 2 and 38% level 3. It is quite meaningful that 373 applicants (about 50% of the newly hired) were employed at level 2. The statistics for nationality for the term are as follows:
Country USA S. Africa Canada England Australia New Zealand Ireland Others Total
Number of Applicants 428 108 89 75 19 16 16 1 752
Percentage(%) 56.9 14.4 11.9 10.0 2.5 2.1 2.1 0.1 100%
According to the statistics, more and more South Africans and Canadians are hired as GETs each year. As EPIK becomes more well known around the world, the number of applicants will continue to increase. EPIK is proud to have recruited more and more qualified GETs than in years past.
