The EPIK team successfully completed recruiting for the Fall 2010 semester and placed a total of 1,069 Guest English Teachers at public schools in 14 provinces throughout Korea. Contracts for new teachers began on August 26th, 2010. In 2010, EPIK helped hiring an annual total of 1,821 Guest English Teachers for the Spring and Fall semesters combined, making a big leap from the recruitment totals in 2007, 2008 and 2009, when 236, 688 and 1,264 teachers were supplied respectively. In addition to the quantitative increase in teachers hired, EPIK has also made a qualitative improvement as well, with76.4% of the total number of incoming teachers starting their contracts at salary level 2 or higher (818 out of 1,069 Guest English Teachers). Thus, a majority of EPIK teachers obtained ESL certificates or majored in Education or English, meeting the high expectations from the schools and parents for the more qualified Guest English Teachers. For the upcoming Spring 2011 semester, we are expecting over 80% of EPIK candidates to qualify for salary level 2 or higher.

EPIK is currently in the process of selecting 1,103 Guest English Teachers for 14 provinces, with contracts starting on February 26th, 2011. For the Spring 2011 recruitment season, eight national primary/secondary schools (out of 37 nationwide) started to participate with EPIK. At present, most national schools in Korea select Guest English Teachers independently, without assistance from the EPIK office, making it difficult to maintain a strong recruitment system. Therefore, it is meaningful to open up the partnership with national schools, although we are hoping that the number of national schools participating with EPIK will increase in the future. As of December 10th, EPIK has received 2,245 applications and has been conducting interviews. We are putting all our efforts into selecting and placing qualified Guest English Teachers in time for the beginning of the March 1st school semester, and we are looking forward to completing another successful recruitment season.
